Wupatki National Monument

By 1182 about 85 to 100 people occupied the Wupatki pueblo's 100-rooms.  Their thriving community with its ballcourt and community center were at the heart of a network of numerous pueblos and homes within the radius of a day's walk.  The remains of two of those pueblos can be visited today--Wukoki and the Citadel.

The lava-strewn landscape in nearby Sunset Crater Volcano NM provides an indicator of just how precarious life was for the residents of this area.
