At the end of my day and a half of sightseeing in Delhi, we made a brief stop at the India Gate in New Delhi. If you’ve been to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the scene is essentially the same.
India Gate is India’s largest war memorial. Built by noted architect Sir Edwin Lutyens to fit into his grand plan for New Delhi, it commemorated the lives of some 90,000 British soldiers who had died during the period of the British Raj, World War I and the Afghan Wars. After India’s independence, a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added.
Nearby there is a sandstone canopy that once housed a statue of George V.
After independence that statue was moved to Coronation Park, but no agreement could be reached on who should be recognized in the now vacant space.
