After another 700+ miles in eleven hours, I exited I-40 at Clinton, OK for a brief stop back into another era when travelers were lucky to make 60 miles a day on Route 66. In my opinion, the exhibits are better at the Powerhouse Visitor Center in Kingman, AZ, but the film clips are good, and the jukebox music, which varies by room, adds a nice touch. Then again, if you really want to experience the Mother Road, head for Seligman, AZ.

A Trip Back in Time at the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum
Sunday, May 31st, 2009The oddball ‘trees’ in the forest
Thursday, May 28th, 2009Drive down I-79 through the wilds of West Virginia and there will always be one of these manmade metal ‘trees’ towering over its green neighbors. My first day on the road, and once my brain registered their offensive presence, I saw them everywhere. This is the first time I’ve taken this route (I-68, I-79, I-64), so I don’t know if there are more than in the past, but they certainly stand out more than on any other route I’ve taken, probably because there are more trees along this route.
A hike at McKeldin
Saturday, May 23rd, 2009The first day of summer weather (85+ & humid) and my last chance to hike before leaving. Since I had to drop B&D at the airport around 8:30a, I needed a hike nearby, so I decided to do the most recent 10k volksmarch circuit at McKeldin. This loop maximizes the ups and downs, but I doubt that any of them are over 100 feet, probably closer to 50′–nothing compared to the thousands I’ll be doing in a couple of weeks. I didn’t take my camera, so this picture is from a previous hike, obviously earlier in the year before everything greened-up.
If you aren’t familiar with volksmarching, check out the American Volksport Association website.

Why a blog?
Friday, May 22nd, 2009The simplest answer: it’s easy. The truth is I have run out of time to figure out an alternative solution to the fact that my website was created with Microsoft FrontPage, but my new laptop came with Vista which is incompatible with FrontPage. In other words, I haven’t been able to find software that’s as simple to use as FrontPage AND will allow me to import my site in total so that I can start where I left off–easily.
So, if you want to follow my travels this summer, you’ll have to bookmark this page. I might be able to figure out how to modify my homepage to provide a link to this blog, but don’t count on it.
