Searching for Fred Harvey, Fall 2006
It's time to hit the road again. This year's trip is 90 percent work. I'll be tracking Fred Harvey from St. Louis to San Diego via Kansas, around southern California, and then back to Missouri via Oklahoma. Along the way I'll spend a week studying northern New Mexico railroad history at an Elderhostel sponsored by the Ghost Ranch and hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon with the Grand Canyon Field Institute. I'll also ride the Santa Fe over Raton Pass and through Apache Canyon. There will be visits to archives at the Heard Museum, Northern Arizona University, and Texas Tech, along with shorter stops at local history societies and libraries. By the time I return I hope to be ready to write about touring the west with Fred Harvey.
