Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
The volcano erupted between 1040 and 1100, leaving behind the cinder cone. The Fred Harvey postcard view is of the crater, but the trail to the summit and crater was closed in 1974 due to erosion. Today there is a one-mile interpretive trail along the base of the cone.
The road through Sunset Crater NM also passes through Wupatki National Monument before returning to Hwy 89, which heads south to Flagstaff.
